Lower Primary Report

As the Lower primary Coordinator I would like to welcome you to St. Mary's Coptic Orthodox College. I hope that you will form a close and rewarding association with our College.

The Lower Primary department provides an exciting curriculum that encourages children to develop positive attitudes to learning and acquire skills that will equip them for their future education. We strive to develop self-esteem, confidence and independence in our students and believe that all students need care and support. They are better prepared for learning when they are happy, safe and healthy.

A comprehensive curriculum is provided in English, Mathematics, Humanities, Science, The Arts- visual and performing, LOTE – Arabic, Health and physical education and ICT. The curriculum is also enriched with Religion and Coptic. The College provides an Early Years program to support literacy and numeracy, Reading Recovery, incursions and excursions, swimming, a healthy eating policy and a Sunsmart program.

I hope we can work together to help our students achieve every success for the future.

At St Mary's Coptic Orthodox College, the essence of education is the growth of each student not just intellectually, but socially, emotionally and spiritually. At the heart of its teaching is the Orthodox faith that continually guides and inspires.

In the Primary sector, students benefit from a great variety of programs. Highlights include our well equipped technology room as well interactive whiteboards in most classrooms. In 2010, year 5 & 6 students have been introduced to Mathletics, an interactive on-line mathematics program. Students have both school and home access fully financed by the college.

As well as studies in English and Mathematics, students explore numerous topics in Humanities and Science lessons. From Aboriginal history, to British settlement and consequent multi-cultural immigration, these topics reveal Australia's history. To culminate these studies students attend two camps. The grade fives visit Ballarat and Bendigo and investigate Victoria's gold rush and the the grade sixes visit Canberra to learn Australia's government system.

The Arts has an important place at St Mary's College. In providing lessons in music, drama and visual arts we provide boundless opportunities for students to explore their creative potential. An annual concert, showcasing every Primary student attracts incredible response. Each year the children perform to packed auditoriums.

At St Mary's College we recognize that sport is an essential part of Australian culture. We celebrate individual and team achievement in sport equally for girls and boys. Sport is about being physically active, having fun, enjoying good health and trying something new. With a variety of sports being taught in Physical Education classes and offered as lunch time competitions, students have ample opportunities of staying active.

As a Prep to Year 12 school, St Mary's College prides itself on the smooth transition of our year six students to year seven. Students move to the next phase of their education with minimal anxiety. Familiar surroundings, teachers and the ever presence of the Orthodox faith strengthens their spirits and empowers them to learn.
